13 new Pediatric residents and 2 Med-Peds residents will be joining us on July 1st. Say “hi” when you see them on the floor. They are:
NEW RESIDENTS:
Taranjeet Ahuja grew up on Long Island. She graduated from the seven year combined program at NYIT/NYCOM. Her interests include Indian Dance, cooking, and bowling.
Rania El-Khawam hails from Amityville. For undergraduate school she attended Boston University, and then went on to St. George’s Medical School. Her hobbies include volleyball, violin and tennis.
Janice John comes to us from the great state of Texas, where she attended college at Houston Baptist University, and then the University of North Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. While in medical school Dr. John also received a Masters degree in Clinical Research and Education via an NIH K30 fellowship. Her outside interests include music, public speaking and teaching.
Sherine Patterson is originally from Jamaica (the Caribbean one). She moved to Houston during High School. From there she went on to Howard University and then to NYU for medical school. Outside of medicine, Dr. Patterson’s activities include Tae Kwon Do and fitness training.
Suzanne Van Benthuysen is another Long Islander, coming to us from Hicksville. She attended undergraduate school at Adelphi, where she also received a Masters degree in Biology. She subsequently received her MD from SUNY-Downstate. Having a strong interest in teaching, Dr. Van Benthuysen has significant teaching experience in multiple venues. Her outside interests include music, English riding, caving, hiking and etymology.
Julie Youssef is a southerner who comes to us from Greenville, South Carolina. She attended college at Emory University, and then traveled north to attend medical school at NYCOM. Dr. Youssef has many hobbies including photography, poetry, computer programming and web page design, soccer and ceramics.
Diana Huzar was born in Poland , and came to the US ( New Jersey) during high school. She attended Rutgers University for undergraduate school, and then Seton Hall for a Masters degree in Biology. Dr. Huzar attended medical school at NYCOM. Her outside interests include ballroom dancing, running, hiking, reading and sightseeing.
Ali McGaw is originally from Jamaica (the Caribbean one). She did her undergraduate studies at Middlebury College in Vermont, and then came to Stony Brook for medical school. She has been very involved in school and community activities throughout her training.
Kristin McKenna is another Long Islander, coming to us from Freeport. Dr. McKenna did her undergraduate studies at Lehigh University, and her medical school studies at RossUniversity. Dr. McKenna enjoys the outdoors and lists travel, hiking, swimming and mountain biking among her hobbies.
Taaha Shakir grew up in Manhasset. He attended The Johns Hopkins University for undergraduate school and then went to medical school at St. George’s. Dr. Shakir is a sports enthusiast. He is a Mets fan. He loves basketball, football, golf, along with reading and cooking.
Kimberly Tafuri hails from Oakdale. She attended Holy Cross for her undergraduate studies. She then came back to Long Island to attend NYCOM for medical school. Dr. Tafuri is a strong advocate of Cystic Fibrosis research. Her outside interests have an athletic leaning, including hiking, biking, ice hockey and volleyball.
Robyn Thomlinson grew up in East Patchogue. She did her undergraduate studies at Colby College, in Maine, and then went on to medical school at Temple University. Her hobbies include travel, roller-blading, snowboarding, music, art and Egyptian history.
New Med-Peds Interns

Aleem Ali hails from Woodside, NY. He went to undergraduate school at NYU and then attended medical school at Tufts University. His outside interests include chess, computers, aquarium design, herpetoculture, interactive fiction writing, photography and hiking.
Alexandr Zaslavsky was born in the Ukraine , and moved to New York at age 13. He attended Stony Brook University for his undergraduate studies, and Ross University for medical school. Dr. Zaslavsky completed an internship in General Surgery, but “saw the light” and decided to transfer into the field of Medicine/Pediatrics. His hobbies include music, the market, and literature.
New Transfer Residents
Elena Kwon joins us as a PL-3 resident after 2 years training at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse. Elena did her undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. She then attended the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. Dr. Kwon’s outside interests include running, yoga, art, music, foreign movies, language, gourmet cuisine and travel.
Ragheed Katkhuda joins us as a PL-2 resident after completing his internship at Tod Children’s Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. Ragheed attended college and medical school at the University of Aleppo in Syria , and then immigrated to the US . Dr. Katkhuda’s hobbies include sports, piano and guitar.
