STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 8, 2004—Stony Brook University has been ranked as one of the best universities in the world and one of the 50 best in North America, according to a survey by the prestigious Times of London. The November 5 edition of the newspaper ranks Stony Brook as No. 136 among universities worldwide, and No. 50 in North America. There are 8,300 colleges and universities worldwide, according to the International Association of Universities.
The elements that the Times factors into its rankings are peer review, research impact, faculty-to-student ratio, the ability to attract internationally-known faculty, and the ability to attract students from all over the world. Stony Brook was the only State University of New York institution to be included on both the lists of the Top 200 universities in the world and the Top 50 in North America. Both lists were topped by Harvard.
Stony Brook ranked tied for 33rd in the world in research impact, which the Times calculated by measuring citations per faculty member.
“Stony Brook University is an extraordinary place,” said Shirley Strum Kenny, President of Stony Brook University. “Our internationally known faculty enrich the lives of students from all over the globe and our researchers pioneer discoveries that improve the lives of people throughout the world.”
In the list of the top 200 in the world, Stony Brook was ranked ahead of such institutions as Dartmouth College (138), Stockholm University in Sweden (139), Rice University (146), Vanderbilt University (156), Frankfurt University in Germany (157), Georgetown University (165), Helsinki University of Technology in Finland (176), and Nanjing University in China (192). Ranked just ahead of Stony Brook were Bonn University in Germany (135) and the University of Maryland (134).
In the list of the top 50 in North America, Stony Brook ranked just behind Maryland (49), Penn State (48) and the University of Virginia (47).
