Stony Brook University's Small Business Development Center Has Moved To Research And Development Park
After more than 20 years on Stony Brook University’s Main Campus, the NYS Small Business Development Center has moved to its new offices in the Research and Development Park. The Stony Brook SBDC, funded by the US Small Business Administration, the State of New York, and Stony Brook University has been assisting small businesses since 1989.

Multi-Center VA Research Trial Reveals No Advantage to CABG Patients with Off-Pump Procedure
A study of 2,203 cardiac surgery patients from Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers nationwide revealed that coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG) completed “off-pump,” meaning without a heart-lung machine, had no advantages in patient outcomes compared to the traditional “on-pump” procedure. A. Laurie Shroyer, Ph.D., Professor of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University and the Northport VA Medical Center, and colleagues from 18 VA medical centers conducted by the VA Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating Center in Perry Point, reported their findings in the November 5 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

International Conference "Migrations and Transnational Identities" Co-presented by Humanities Institute and D'Amato Chair in Italian Studies

The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University, in collaboration with the Alfonse M. D'Amato Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, presents an international conference, "Migrations and Transnational Identities: Crossing Borders, Bridging Disciplines." The event will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University, in the Charles B. Wang Center and the Humanities Building on Thursday, November 12 from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, November 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

SBU Senior from Central Islip Takes a Bite Out of Tuition with Winning Essay on News Literacy
Meghan Shalvoy, a Stony Brook University fourth year Women’s Studies major from East Islip, NY, won the School of Journalism’s second annual Center for News Literacy Spring 2009 essay contest with an essay addressed to the president of a fictional college, encouraging the college to keep News Literacy in its curriculum.

Kevin Law Takes Helm at Stony Brook Council; Appointed Chairman of Campus Oversight Board
Kevin Law, President and CEO of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), loved his undergraduate years as a Political Science major at Stony Brook University. Now, more than 25 years later, he is coming back to campus in a very different capacity. The St. James, New York resident has been appointed Chairman of the Stony Brook Council by Governor David A. Paterson, a board that serves as an oversight and advisory body to the campus and to Stony Brook’s president and senior officers. Law succeeds Richard T. Nasti (SBU Class of ’78), who served as Council Chair from 1995 through June 2009.
