STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 16, 2006 – Aldustus Jordan, Ed.D., Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, was honored as the 2006 Long Island Man of the Year by the Suffolk Community Council, Inc., at its “Celebrating Connections” gala at Flowerfield in St. James on May 4. The award is given annually to a man who has demonstrated a life-long commitment to promoting Suffolk Community Council’s mission of improving and empowering the lives of Suffolk County residents. The Council is an umbrella organization of public and private health and human service agencies, the business community, and members of the community at large. Dr. Jordan, who grew up in poverty in Queens and made what he called in his acceptance speech as “questionable, risky, and life-threatening decisions” as a youth and gang member, rose from his underprivileged background to launch a 35-year career in higher education that has touched and guided the lives of hundreds of medical students and youths in the community. He counsels medical students on a regular basis and finds time to work with undergraduates and high school students, with the mission of introducing generations of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students to opportunities in higher education and health professions in particular. “I can honestly say that nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping another human being,” said Dr. Jordan, who has been Associate Dean of Student Affairs for more than 30 years. His commitment to service and social justice began during the civil rights movement and continues. “Dr. Jordan has taken that commitment to Stony Brook with his teaching and administrative duties, as well as his service on campus and beyond it,” said Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Jordan was instrumental in founding the Stony Brook University Adult Literacy Center and currently serves as President of the Board of Literacy Suffolk. He is President of Stony Brook’s Black Faculty and Staff Association and is a founding member and Chair of the Board of Directors of ERASE Racism, an organization devoted to undoing institutional racism on Long Island. Dr. Jordan also founded the 21st Century Save Our Kids Task Force, a program that involves youth conferences and helps teachers better understand and respond to the tide of youth violence in schools and community. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, Dr. Jordan organized Stony Brook University staff and students to work in partnership with the Urban League. The effort resulted in truckloads of clothing and supplies for Gulf Coast families ravaged by the storm. Dr. Jordan lives in Coram with his wife, Barbara.
