Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny Announces Capital Campaign Raises Nearly $360 Million
Stony Brook University President Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny announced today that the University has received gifts and pledges totaling nearly $360 million in its first-ever capital campaign, “The Emergence of Stony Brook.” The seven-year campaign, with an original goal of $300 million, is the largest ever of any campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The campaign officially ends on June 30, the end of the University’s fiscal year and also the effective date of Dr. Kenny’s retirement, following 15 years as Stony Brook’s fourth president.

Research Team Including Jin Koda at SBU's Department of Physics and Astronomy Discover New Tidal Debris from Colliding Galaxies
Astronomers are announcing today that they have discovered new tidal debris stripped away from colliding galaxies. The research will be being presented during a press conference at the 214th annual American Astronomical Society meeting in Pasadena, California by Drs. Jin Koda at Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York; Nick Scoville of California Institute of Technology; Yoshiaki Taniguchi of Ehime University, Ehime, Japan; and, the COSMOS survey team.

Connecting Delta Cities: International Workshop Focuses on Strategies for Adapting and Mitigating Impacts of Climate Change on Coastal Cities at Stony Brook Manhattan
By 2040, more than 50% of the global population is expected to live in urban coastal areas. Yet climate change and sea level rise have made many coastal cities even more vulnerable to flooding due to rising sea level, storm surges and extreme weather-related river floods. On June 9-10, 2009, an international group of 75 scientists, engineers, city planners, port, transportation and emergency managers will convene at Stony Brook Manhattan to discuss common challenges and innovative strategies for protecting coastal populations, port facilities, industrial centers, transportation corridors, water systems, telecommunications facilities, hospitals, schools and financial businesses in flood-prone coastal urban areas.

Retiring SBU President Shirley Strum Kenny Confers Degrees At Her Final Commencement Ceremony
Shirley Strum Kenny conferred the final 5,421 degrees of her 15 year career as President of Stony Brook University at the annual University Commencement ceremony today. The Commencement – Long Island’s largest – will conferred 3,391 undergraduate degrees, 1,290 Masters, 294 doctoral, 223 Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Dental Surgery/Doctor of Physical Therapy, and 223 certificates.

United States Department of Energy to Establish Frontier Research Center at Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University will be home to the new Northeastern Chemical Energy Storage Center (NOCESC), which involves a team of experimentalists and theorists including Director, Clare P. Grey, Associate Director of The Center for Environmental Molecular Science and Peter Khalifah, Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at Stony Brook University; Jason Graetz and Xiao-Qing Yang of Brookhaven National Laboratory; and additional collaborators from Rutgers University, Binghamton University, MIT, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of Michigan, Argonne National Laboratory, and University of Florida.
