Oyeronke Oyewum, Ph.D, is Associate Professor of Sociology and Chair of Women's Studies. Her research focuses on the dominance of Western perspectives in the making and production of knowledge, as well as sociological issues relating to women. Her objective is to broaden scholarly understanding to include Africa and to create fruitful exchanges between hegemonic discourses and those of cultures that are underrepresented.
She is the author of The Invention of Women: Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourse (1997) which critiques the imperial stance, unwarranted universalisms, and reductionist formulations of Western feminist accounts of gender and social hierarchy.
Specific areas of expertise: The economic and social stratification of the global system. Legacies of the Atlantic slave trade, European colonization.
