STONY BROOK, NY, October 4, 2004—The issue of universal health coverage will be the focus of a symposium at Stony Brook University featuring leading medical experts from around the country. “Universal Health Coverage: Can it be Achieved?” will take place on Thursday, October 14, 2004 from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM in the 3rd Floor Galleria of the Health Sciences Center.
The symposium, part of the Vice President’s HealthCareForum series, celebrates the new Graduate program in Public Health at Stony Brook. The symposium is free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register, call (631) 444-2074.
The keynote speaker for the event is Paul B. Ginsburg, Ph.D., President of the Center for Studying Health System Change, who will speak on “Paths to Universal Coverage.” A noted consultant on the transformation taking place in healthcare and named by Modern Healthcare in 2003 as one of the most powerful persons in healthcare, Dr. Ginsburg has examined topics such as consumer driven health care and competition within the industry.

Oliver Fein, M.D., Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Public Health at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, who will speak on, “Health Insurance Reform in the U.S.: Isn’t it Time for National Health Insurance?”; David Himmelstein, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, whose presentation is entitled, “National Health Insurance: The Only Viable Option for Health Care Reform”; Mark Schlesinger, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine at Yale University, who will speak on “Windows of Opportunity: Why Medicare Has Become the Most Promising Pathway to Universal Health Insurance”; and Debra Dwyer, Ph.D., A professor of Economics at Stony Brook, whose presentation is entitled, “Current Issues in the Health Care Insurance Market.”
John Rizzo, Ph.D., Professor of Public Health and Economics at Stony Brook, and Jamie Talan, healthcare writer for Newsday, will serve as moderators. Lunch will be served.
