STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 5, 2006 -- Thousands of Long Islanders will once again take to the streets of Stony Brook to help raise money for breast and prostate cancer research at Stony Brook University during the “Walk for Beauty, Walk for Life" on Sunday, October 22, 2006.
Co-sponsored by The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) and Stony Brook University Medical Center, the 4k/6k Walk initially begin as an effort to raise awareness about the need for an annual mammography, it has helped raise more than half million dollars to date toward breast and prostate cancer research. Proceeds have also provided wigs and prosthesis for cancer patients without financial resources. The event raises about $60,000 each year.

The Walk unites the community with the doctors, nurses, and staff at Stony Brook University Medical Center in one of the largest events held annually to raise awareness and fund research for breast and prostate cancer. The continued growth of this event demonstrates Long Island's commitment to this important cause.

The “Walk for Beauty, Walk for Life” begins at the Stony Brook Post office in the Stony Brook Village Center, Main Street on the Harbor. It will follow a scenic route of colorful tree-lined streets along Stony Brook Harbor, through the Village and past historic landmarks including the Stony Brook Grist Mill, the Three Village Inn, and other buildings that date back to the 18th and 19th century. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. and the Walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Shuttle buses run continuously from the South P-Lot on the University Campus beginning at 7:30 am for walkers who want to avoid traffic.
