New York Magazine’s annual "Best Doctors in New York" issue features 26 physicians in a wide range of specialties from Stony Brook University Medical Center. They were selected from more than 50,000 physicians in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. The June 19 issue, which hits newsstands this week, profiles ten “Medical Marvel” cases; Stony Brook University Medical Center doctors are featured in two of them. The first profile highlights the unusual case of Arcenio Matias, a factory worker whose hands were bilaterally detached during a work incident. Stony Brook University Hospital surgeons interviewed for the article were Dr. Alexander Dagum, Chief of Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Lawrence Hurst, Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery. Drs. Dagum and Hurst and their team reattached both of Matias’ hands within twelve hours of the accident with a prognosis of 50 percent return to full use. The second Stony Brook case highlights the anomaly of Roseann Errante who was 30 weeks pregnant with triplets when she suffered a dissected aorta. Interviewed about the case were Dr. Alan Monheit, Obstetric Surgeon and Dr. Frank Seifert, Cardiothoracic Surgeon who describe the life-threatening condition and the back-to-back surgeries that started at 9:30 pm and finished at 3 am -- ultimately resulting in a positive outcome.
The "Best Doctors" list is a collaboration of the magazine and Castle Connolly Medical, the research and publishing company. The selection process is based on questionnaires sent to 16,000 top physicians in the New York area. The Castle Connolly staff conducts hundreds of telephone interviews with leading specialists, chiefs of service, and other hospital personnel. Criteria for selection include training, clinical skills, interpersonal skills, education, residency, board certification, professional reputation, and other factors.
