Stony Brook Southampton to Host Red Watch Program for its Students
WHO:
Stony Brook Southampton Senior Counselor Ginny St. John and Fire Marshall Michael Kampf.
WHAT:
Will lead approximately 12 college students in Red Watch training. In June of 2008, a professor at Stony Brook University tragically lost her son to toxic drinking. It was a death that could have been prevented, and spawned The Red Watch Band Movement – a national initiative that started right at the Stony Brook University campus to dispel myths about binge drinking and prevent death from alcohol poisoning. Visuals include students using CPR training equipment.
WHY:
Toxic drinking is an epidemic on campuses all across America. It means consuming so much alcohol the drinker passes out. But while "sleeping it off," the victim may be quietly dying. The Red Watch Band movement is designed to end alcohol overdose deaths by teaching students how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon professional help. All participants who complete the RWB training receive a red watch, a symbol of their willingness to save lives and prevent death from toxic drinking. The program is hoped to be expanded to area high schools soon.
WHERE:
Stony Brook Southampton Special Events Room.
