Stony Brook Southampton to Host Blood Drive
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y., March 25, 2009 -- Stony Brook Southampton will hold a blood drive on Thursday, April 2, in conjunction with Long Island Blood Services. Healthy people ages 16 and older are encouraged to donate blood at the campus gym on Tuckahoe Road in Southampton from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site including information about their temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and hemoglobin level. Eligible donors include those people at least age 16 with parental consent, who weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, are in good health and meet all Food & Drug Administration and State Department of Health donor criteria. People over 75 may donate with a doctor's note.
There is an increased demand of blood from hospitals due to the needs of cancer patients, surgeries, emergencies and medical advancements. Without volunteer blood donations, over 4 million Americans would die annually. A single blood donation can help save up to three lives.
