Sponsored by "Alternatives Counseling" and in Conjunction With Southampton Town Agencies, Stony Brook Southampton Hosts a Seminar on Teen Drinking and Parental Hosting Laws
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y., April 21, 2009 – Sponsored by Alternatives Counseling Services, Inc., and working with the Southampton Town Police and Southampton Town Youth Board, Stony Brook Southampton will host a timely seminar on teen drinking and parental hosting laws in a forum titled, “Parents Who Host Lose the Most: Don’t Be a Party to Teenage Drinking.”

Many well-meaning parents think that it is enough to take away car keys at their teen's parties so the teens can't drink and drive. Parents provide the alcohol or allow alcohol to be consumed based on the false belief that it's a rite of passage, especially at prom and graduation parties. This event intends to bring together parent groups, government leaders, counselors and law-enforcement agencies in an important discussion on the new Suffolk County hosting laws, and discuss alternatives for teen drinking.
“Parents Who Host Lose the Most” will be held in Duke Lecture Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4. For further information, contact Darren.Johnson@stonybrook.eduor 631-632-5088.
The event is funded by a Drug-Free Action Alliance grant to Alternatives Counseling Services, Inc., the East End’s not-for-profit drug and alcohol treatment center since 1969, and, timed to coincide with the start of prom season, kicks off the agency’s new public-awareness campaign in regard to hosting laws.
The "Parents Who Host, Lose The Most" public awareness campaign was developed by Drug-Free Action Alliance in 2000 to educate parents about the health and safety risks of serving alcohol at teen parties and to increase awareness of and compliance with underage drinking laws.
Specific Stony Brook Southampton sponsors include University Police, Counseling and Media Relations.
