"The year 2009 is of profound importance for our planet and its species," Dr. Carlin said. "Never in human history has so much been at stake. Never has it been more important to reexamine who we are as individuals and world cultures. The current economic crisis is more than just a typical recession; it requires a fundamental rethinking of priorities and principles. How do we, as citizens, begin repairing our world? What are the key leverage points we need to focus upon to maximize our potential for rapid change?"

These questions and more will be discussed at the event.

For the past fifteen years, Dr. Carlin has worked as a Long Island geographer advocating sustainable development principles.  In 1995, Carlin completed his Ph.D. in Geography from Clark University.  From 1996 to 2004, Dr. Carlin was Co-Director of Long Island University’s Institute for Sustainable Development. The Institute hosted regional conferences, worked with the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition on detailed GIS street maps of breast cancer, developed Long Island’s first report on sustainable indicators, and was profiled on Voices of Vision, a 2003/2004 PBS television series.

Dr. Carlin also co-directed Southampton College’s Greenprint program. The Greenprint Committee advocated for LEED construction standards for the College’s new library. The Committee helped lead the College towards new core curriculum standards that included environmental literacy. Other projects included wastewater management, recycling and renewable energy.

Dr. Carlin, a resident of Hampton Bays, has been a faculty member of the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University since the fall of 2005.  In 2007, Dr. Carlin founded the Long Island Climate Solutions Network; and in 2008, he joined the Town of Southampton’s new “Sustainable Southampton” Advisory Committee and the steering committee of ClimateCaucus.Net, an outgrowth of the 2007 UN conference, “Climate Change: How It Impacts Us All.”

He is currently writing a book examining sustainability issues in suburbia.
