Festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 4, in Chancellors Hall and continue at the Windmill. The popular event is free and open to the public.
With a campus focus on environmental sustainability, the Windmill – constructed in the early 1700s and moved from Southampton Village to its present location in 1890 as part of the former Claflin estate – is an important symbol of preservation and renewable energy. Recently, new blades were installed and the inside restored. This will be the first time in over a decade that the Windmill itself will be open to the public at the annual Lighting.
Now in its third year, Stony Brook Southampton has developed a truly inter-disciplinary, 21st century curriculum that closely addresses all the complicated facets of sustainability, offering students not only a world view of the issues that the planet now faces, but also hands-on experience in solving these issues. Benefiting by its beautiful location on the Atlantic Ocean, and as part of it green mission as the nation’s only stand-alone campus devoted to Sustainability, Stony Brook Southampton's innovative majors include: Coastal Environmental Studies, Ecosystems and Human Impact; Environmental Design, Policy and Planning; Sustainability Studies; Environmental Studies; Marine Science, and Marine Vertebrate Biology. Stony Brook Southampton also has an esteemed MFA in Writing and Literature program. The campus is accepting applications for Fall 2010 for freshmen and transfers.
