SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — This year’s annual Windmill Lighting at Stony Brook Southampton will include a marching band, jazz trio, hot cocoa, cider and holiday treats, plus a welcome by Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny and Southampton Interim Dean Martin Schoonen.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 7, in Chancellors Hall and continue to the Windmill. The popular event is free and open to the public.

With a campus focus on environmental sustainability, the Windmill – constructed in the early 1700s and moved from Southampton Village to its present location in 1890 as part of the former Claflin estate – is an important symbol of preservation and renewable energy.

In only its first full year of operation, Stony Brook Southampton is Stony Brook University’s newest campus. Located on 82 seaside acres on the world renowned East End of Long Island, N.Y., Stony Brook Southampton’s interdisciplinary academic programs focus on issues of ecological sustainability, with undergraduate majors in Environmental Studies and Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. The campus is also home to a nationally-recognized graduate program in Writing and Literature, Stony Brook’s Center for Wine, Food and Culture, the Pollock-Krasner Library and its nearby Pollock-Krasner House, the Avram Theater and its annual vocal series Sustainable Pleasures, and the three-decades-old Summer Writers Conference, which annually attracts many of the country’s literary stars.
