Kenneth Klapak, a 53-year-old sheet metal mechanic and guitar player whose hands were nearly severed during an accident on May 16 will share his story alongside the Stony Brook surgical team that worked to attach both hands.

Teenager Recovered from Traumatic Brain Injury Presents Gift to Doctors at Event Highlighting Importance of Helmets
Traumatic brain injury survivor Arielle Budnick, 18, of Queens, N.Y will thank the neurosurgeons and caregivers at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital who saved her life, in a ceremony highlighting the importance of wearing helmets. Arielle suffered a traumatic brain injury and fractured skull when skateboarding without a helmet. After almost a year of surgery and rehabilitation, Ariel has made a full recovery and will graduate from the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts in Queens in June.

6,000 pinwheels shining in the spring sun – symbolizing lives lost annually to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease -- are a powerful reminder and the backdrop at Stony Brook University’s “Ride for Life” Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony. The event is a cornerstone of the annual Ride for Life, a 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island from May 6 to May 18.
