124 NEW MED STUDENTS TO TAKE HIPPOCRATIC OATH, GET “WHITE COAT” AT TRADITIONAL CEREMONY

Incoming SBU School of Medicine Class Part of a National Call for Increased Med School Enrollment

WHO:
The 124 new students comprising Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s Class of 2015
Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences, and Dean, School of Medicine

WHAT / VISUALS:            
124 incoming students, from 64 different universities around the nation, are presented with the physician’s white coat – the symbol of professionalism, responsibility and compassion in the practice of Medicine. Also at the ceremony:
•Class of 2012 student Kamron Pourman shares his experiences on how to thrive the rigors of medical school training.
•Upon putting on their white coats for the first time, the incoming class recites the Hippocratic Oath during traditional initiation rite.

Student Activities Center (SAC) Auditorium, Main Campus of Stony Brook University

WHY:        
Tradition at many established medical schools around the nation, white coat ceremonies are an initiation rite and are symbolic to Medicine as a profession that combines professionalism with scientific excellence and compassionate care. The Association of American Medical Colleges continues to call for increased medical school enrollment nationwide to accommodate the nation’s growing need for more physicians. Stony Brook University School of Medicine has held a white coat ceremony since 1998. The incoming student numbers matches the largest in the School’s history.

DIRECTIONS
LIE to Exit 62. North on Nicolls Road 8.5 miles. Cross over Route 347 and make left at the Main SBU Campus Entrance. Go straight to Administration Building garage. The SAC is located in the center of the Academic Mall.
