Jackie Smith, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Sociology, teaching courses on the United Nations, social movements, and global sociology. Smith’s research includes international surveys of activist groups, studies of the global population of transnational associations since the 1960s, and analyses of media reporting on public protests. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the World Society Foundation, and the Aspen Institute Nonprofit Sector Research Fund. She has edited numerous books, including Coalitions Across Borders: Negotiating Difference and Unity in Transnational Struggles Against Neoliberalism.

Specific areas of expertise: Global Politics. Transnational activism. Transnational Dimensions of Social Movements.

Michael S, Kimmel, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Sociology. He has authored several books on men and masculinity and among the courses he teaches is “Sociology of Masculinity,” which examines men’s lives from a feminist perspective. He was an expert witness for the U.S. Justice Department cases that led to the previously all-male Virginia Military Institute to admit women. He also serves as a spokesman for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism.

Specific areas of expertise: Sociological trends relating to men and boys.
