George Sterman, Ph.D., is Professor of Physics and Director of the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook. His research in quantum field theory has had wide ranging applications in high energy physics. He is recognized for showing how high energy particles reflect the scattering of quarks and gluons, and for developing methods for testing theories of elementary particles at high energy accelerators worldwide. His current research concentrates on how complex outcomes in collision experiments arise from simple underlying theories. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and winner of its J. J. Sakurai Prize for Elementary Particle Theory.

Harold Metcalf, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and founder and director of the Laser Teaching Center at Stony Brook. He has a long-established record of teaching and research in atomic and laser physics. Dr. Metcalf did early experiments in precision measurements and molecular spectroscopy, went on to quantum beats, and was one of the founders of the field of laser cooling in the early 1980s, which has since expanded to include about one-fourth of the entire field of atomic physics. He is the principle author of the only widely accepted textbook in the field. He is a Life Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.
Areas of expertise: Laser cooling, atom optics, optical control of atomic motion, lasers, atomic spectroscopy.
