Fu-Pen Chiang, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Director of the Laboratory for Experimental Mechanics Research at Stony Brook University. Regarded as one of the world's leaders in the field of experimental solid mechanics, Dr. Chiang's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, Department of Transportation, and industrial concerns. He received the B.J. Lazan Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics in 1993 in recognition of his outstanding original technical contributions in optical metrology. Dr. Chiang has lectured in 16 countries and published more than 300 papers in 36 technical journals.

Specific areas of expertise: Applied optics, micro-mechanics, and nanotechnology.

Miriam Rafailovich, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Material Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She also is Director of the Garcia Center for Polymers at Engineered Interfaces, which is funded by the National Science Foundatation. This collaboration between the university and industry performs state-of-the-art research into the fundamental applications of thin polymer films. The Garcia Center also provides opportunities for high school students to conduct research projects at Stony Brook, and is one of the nation's leading incubators of high school research in engineering.
