Studying How Lungs Work
Members of the community who are overweight, healthy non-smokers are invited to participate in a study about how lungs work. This study involves two hours of pulmonary function testing, followed by two days of chest imaging (about four hours on the first day and two hours on the second day). The purpose of the study is to help determine whether weight affects the way lungs clear things that are breathed in. Candidates must be over the age of 18, may not be pregnant, must be overweight, may not have a cough and not have a pacemaker or other device in the chest. Study investigating the effectiveness of a new medication for treating pediatric PTSD
Stony Brook University Hospital’s Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry is seeking children and adolescents to enroll in a study investigating the effectiveness of a new medication for treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition triggered by experiencing a traumatic event. PTSD does not only develop in adults but in children and adolescents as well. Of those children who have experienced at least one traumatic event, 3% to 15 % of girls, and 1% to 6% of boys, could be diagnosed with PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD include recurrent nightmares, apprehension, withdrawal, excessive wariness, agitation, and/or irritability, all of which can occur months or years after an incident. Participants in the 10-week clinical trial will receive the medication, medical evaluations, and three therapy sessions at no charge. To participate, study patients must be from 6 to 17 years of age and have a current diagnosis of PTSD. Study to Identify New Cancer Markers
The General Clinical Research Center at Stony Brook University Hospital is seeking healthy volunteers for a study to identify new cancer markers inn blood, tissue and body fluids to develop laboratory tests that may diagnose cancers earlier and/or identify patients at risk for a poor outcome and who may benefit from more aggressive therapy than is normally recommended. Volunteers are offered compensation up to $25 plus hospital parking. The next blood draw will take place on June 29, 2006 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. If you are 18-60 years of age and have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), you're invited to participate in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Stress: A Fact Of Life
Some people get stressed out more easily than others. Stress can affect the brain, heart, hormones, and mental performance. If you are a man or woman 18-50 years of age, free on two consecutive week-days including two hospital overnights (for example, Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon, or Tuesday night to Thursday afternoon) you could be eligible for the study. Participants area free to pursue normal activities after 4:15 pm, but must be back for the overnight stay. Compensation: $200. MRI Research Volunteers Needed
Women 18-65 of age are needed as volunteers for participation in MRI research. Volunteers should be healthy and not have any metal or electronic implants.
