Medical Center / Health Care
For the first time in its four-year history, the annual event will be held on the grounds of the Cancer Center and Center for Outpatient Services, located at 3 Edmund Pelligrino Drive. Stony Brook University Medical Center opened this building for outpatient care in 2007. This year’s event also features live music from “Practicing Without a License,” an instrumental band made of players who have a day job – they are all practicing physicians at SBUMC. Also new for children is a disc jockey-led scavenger hunt.
“Our Cancer Survivors Day event has grown each year, and the many faces and ages of our patients illustrate the hope of survivorship and the fact that more people continue to survive many forms of cancer,” says Ted Gabig, M.D., Interim Director, Stony Brook University Cancer Center. According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, a “survivor” is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. The Foundation reports that nearly 11 million Americans are cancer survivors. National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration in hundreds of communities worldwide. The non-profit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation (http://www.ncsdf.org) supports hundreds of hospitals and support groups nationwide. National Cancer Survivors Day is one of the world’s largest cancer survivor events.
