Dr. Sandeep Gupta

Sandeep Gupta, M.D., has joined the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stony Brook University Medical Center as Assistant Professor of Surgery. He comes to SBUMC from the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, where he completed his General Surgery Residency, Transplant Immunology Fellowship and Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship.

 Dr. Gupta will focus his practice at Stony Brook on surgery for all forms of adult heart disease. His special interests include minimally invasive complex mitral valve repair and aortic valve surgery, including robotic mitral valve repair. His practice will also include treating patients with coronary artery disease with all arterial conduits. Dr. Gupta has extensive experience with diseases of the aortic root, arch and thoracoabdominal segments of the aorta and in treating patients who need reoperative surgery.

Rosengart, M.D., Chair of the Department of Surgery and Co-Director of the SBU Heart Center. “Dr. Gupta’s experience and skill will assist us in performing minimally invasive complex mitral valve repair.”

Board certified in General Surgery, Dr. Gupta received his MD degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT. He then went to the Cleveland Clinic for all his surgical training. He completed his residency and chief residency in General Surgery. Following this, he was the Allogen Laboratory Fellow at the Cleveland Clinical where his research focused on antibodies and thoracic organ transplantation and rejection. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery as the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

 Dr. Gupta has published in numerous medical journals, as well as presented at national and international surgery meetings. He received the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Innovator Award for development of devices to enhance the practice of minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgery. Dr. Gupta was selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of Guide to America’s Top Surgeons, published by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.
