Stony Brook University Hospital Sleep Disorders Center Opens New High Tech Multi-Disciplinary Facility in Smithtown

STONY BROOK, NY, May 23, 2006 – Stony Brook University Hospital, home to one of the oldest credentialed sleep disorders programs in the United States, officially opened its doors to a new multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art Sleep Disorders Center located at 240 Middle Country Road in Smithtown. The custom-designed facility is equipped with eight bedrooms with the newest technological advances used to monitor sleep studies.

On hand to welcome guests and dignitaries for the official ribbon cutting ceremony was Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine. He welcomed Senator John Flanagan and Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, as well as the multidisciplinary team of the Sleep Center’s three physician-directors who are board certified in Sleep Medicine: Avram Gold, M.D., Medical Director for Internal Medicine; Catherine Kier, M.D., Medical Director for Pediatrics; and, Marta Maczaj, M.D., Medical Director for Psychiatry.

Stony Brook University Hospital Sleep Disorders Center provides sleep studies for Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry as well as clinic services for Psychiatry and Internal Medicine. The Center, established in 1979, is one of the oldest in the country and has been a leader in Sleep Medicine for the past 27 years. It hosted the first ever board examinations for Sleep Technologists.
