Dr. Bao comes to SBUMC from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He joins the Upper Gastrointestinal and General Oncologic Surgery Group, a team of experts dedicated to broadening minimally invasive surgery for complex GI tumors and other diseases of the GI tract at SBUMC. “The appointment of Dr. Bao is an important addition to our robotic upper GI surgery program,” says Kevin T. Watkins, M.D., Chief of the Upper Gastrointestinal and General Oncologic Surgery Group. “Dr. Bao’s experience and skill will assist us in performing robotically assisted minimally invasive surgery.” “We are pleased to add Dr. Bao to this specialized surgical group, which is a key part of the development of a comprehensive surgical program at Stony Brook for treating upper GI and soft tissue malignancies in ways that are highly effective, technologically advanced, less invasive, and lead to better outcomes for patients,” says Dr. Rosengart. Dr. Bao uses standard open surgery as well as laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques when possible. In addition, for cancers spreading along the surface of the abdomen, he provides treatment using experimental modalities such as heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Dr. Bao’s research interests include intraoperative tumor imaging and surgical navigation, decision analysis for cancer management, as well as minimally invasive technology. As a surgical resident, Dr. Bao was granted a National Research Service Award (National Institutes of Health) as Principal Investigator for his study titled “Tracked Laparoscopic Ultrasound for Use in Liver Surgery.” While at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he earned a Certificate in Clinical Research during his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. This year, Dr. Bao was selected for inclusion in the latest edition of Guide to America’s Top Surgeons, published by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.
