STONY BROOK, N.Y., August 7, 2009 – The Baldwin brothers and other acting, music and sports stars took part in the Annual Celebrity Golf Outing benefitting the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, which supports research at Stony Brook University Medical Center investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer. The event raised $170,000 and took place on July 20 at the Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James, N.Y.

The golf outing was a mixing and mingling of sports and entertainment personalities, such as NFL great Otis Anderson, former New York Yankee star Bernie Williams, John Melendez of the The Tonight Show, and some of the Baldwin brothers, a mainstay of the event that supports a fund in honor of their mother, a breast cancer survivor.

“The entire Baldwin family is actively involved in supporting the Fund’s important mission, and they believe the key to the cure for breast cancer lies in research,” says Linda Winicki, Director of Development at the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. “The golf outing honors all breast cancer survivors and those we have lost to the disease.”

Many research scientists and cancer specialists as SBUMC have received support for their work through the Fund. To date, the Fund has awarded nearly 60 research grants totaling in excess of $3 million to medical research.

The mission of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund is to support both new and established researchers at SBUMC. The Fund’s efforts translate directly to grants that are awarded directly to researchers at all levels of basic and clinical investigation.
