STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 12, 2011 – Put on your running or walking sneakers and join the families and friends of pediatric patients cared for at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital at the 23rd Annual Run for Children. The 5K course brings participants through rolling hills, alongside a stream and within scenic tree-lined neighborhoods in Setauket. The event benefits the Child Life Program at Stony Brook. The run/walk starts at 9:30 a.m. at Gelinas Jr. High School on October 16.  Please register online via the Child Life website.

The Run for Children supports the Child Life Program, which strives to normalize the healthcare experience of pediatric patients and their families to reduce stress associated with illness and hospitalization. Certified Child Life Specialists at Stony Brook Children’s provide patients with procedural support, preparation and education, medical play therapy, and diversionary activities.

“Kids need more than medicine to get well,” says Paulette Walter, Child Life Specialist at Stony Brook. “Our program focuses on pediatric patients’ entire emotional, social, and play needs while they are hospitalized.”

All proceeds from the run/walk go directly to Child Life activities and events, such as music therapy and patient birthday parties. Funds raise will also be used to purchase new games, toys, movies, arts and crafts, and playroom supplies for the hospitalized children.

Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in all age categories. Raffles prizes and refreshments highlight the post-race activities. Pre-registration is $25 per individual and $30 day of race.
