Dorothy S. Lane, M.D., M.P.H. is a Distinguished Service Professor and researcher in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Director of the Residency Program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health. She also is the Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education and the Principal Investigator for the NHLBI funded Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Clinical Center at Stony Brook, an eleven-year landmark study of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among postmenopausal women. The WHI includes both and observational study and clinical trials that test three distinct interventions: postmenopausal hormone therapy, low-fat diet, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation, on incidence and mortality due to cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, and osteoporotic fractures.
