Stony Brook, NY, June 7, 2006 - The Emerson Quartet International Chamber Music Workshop will be held at Stony Brook University, June 27 to 30. The world-renowned Quartet will coach The Calder Quartet, Escher String Quartet, and Hyperion String Quartet, who come to Stony Brook as a result of a highly selective audition process. These three young, talented quartets have been invited to participate in the Emerson String Quartet master classes with Emerson String Quartet members Eugene Drucker, violin; Philip Setzer, violin; Lawrence Dutton, viola; and David Finckel, cello.
The Workshop will provide an intensive, inside look at the preparation and performance of the string quartet repertoire. Stimulating seminars given by today’s leading arts figures are planned as an integral part of the daily coaching sessions. The repertoire featured in the four-day program includes works of Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Mozart.
Acclaimed for its inspired performances, artistry, and technical mastery, the Emerson String Quartet is one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. With seven Grammy awards to its name, the most recent received this year, the quartet regularly performs in major concert halls worldwide. The Emerson String Quartet joined the Stony Brook faculty as quartet-in-residence in 2002 and is actively committed to the support and training of young musicians and emerging ensembles.
The public is invited to selected events that will prove to be an up-close, stimulating look at the art of the string quartet, in both preparation and performance.
