STONY BROOK, N. Y., April 29, 2008 — Stony Brook Is Red Hot! It’s a familiar and catchy phrase seen and heard throughout the Stony Brook University campus. On April 28, that sentiment of spirit was be transformed into a fashion statement, when President Shirley Strum Kenny announced that wearing red on campus on Fridays is a new tradition at Stony Brook University.

“Stony Brook is ‘Red Hot’ and getting hotter!” said Dr. Kenny. “Thanks to the excellent faculty, staff, and students at Stony Brook, we have reason to boast. I am urging everyone to join me in wearing our school color—RED—every Friday to celebrate the spirit of Stony Brook and the pride we share in being part of a great campus community.”

The concept of wearing red to work, class, and campus events to inspire institutional spirit originated in the Department of Athletics when wearing red on Friday became a departmental theme in a show of support for our Seawolves teams.

“Wearing red unites the campus and generates pride among faculty, staff, students, and alumni,” added Dr. Kenny. “That’s why ‘Red Fridays’ is such a terrific concept. It brings us all together in a show of pride for the University.”

Athletic wear, such as polo shirts, sweaters, jackets and caps have been at the core of the product line offering for many years. Recently the University unveiled a business clothing line called “Fashion for Fridays” to expand the selection for those seeking a more professional look. This classic new collection includes sweaters for men and women, women’s blouses, men’s dress shirts, mock turtlenecks, and jackets. Accessories include handbags, silk ties, and scarves.

Official Stony Brook University gear is available at any one of four on-campus locations including the Seawolves MarketPlace, Barnes & Noble bookstore, Matthew’s bookstore, and the Wang Center Gift Shop. The line is also available online at www.shopsbu.com and www.goseawolves.org.
