STONY BROOK, NY, October 11, 2012 – Stony Brook University Biomedical Engineering (BME) student Vihita Patel was selected as one of four undergraduate recipients of the international 2012 Research and Design Awards by the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). Patel was selected for her work entitled “Low Intensity Vibration Treatment Tapers Obesity-Induced Type 2 Diabetes by Decreasing the Size of Adipocytes in Mice.” She will be recognized at the BMES 2012 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 24 to October 27.

The Research and Design Award specifically targets excellence in undergraduate research with recipients selected on the basis of originality, significance, thoroughness of design analysis and performance evaluation. The award includes a certificate, a small stipend and an opportunity for students to have their work noticed, presented and published as they begin their careers.

Patel was mentored by Distinguished Professor Clinton Rubin, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook and Director of the Center for Biotechnology, and BME Research Assistant Professor Ete Chan.
“Vihita has been a wonderful addition to the lab and her careful outcome analyses of this diet-induced obesity model will prove critical in translating this non-drug therapy into the clinic to mitigate symptoms of type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Rubin. “All of us in the Biomedical Engineering Department are extremely proud of Vihita’s accomplishments and that her work has been recognized by BMES through their annual undergrad research awards. She is resourceful, creative and committed, and is a great reflection of the outstanding students that are conducting research in Stony Brook labs all over campus.”
