NIAF Public Policy Lecture Series To Feature Congressman Peter King

STONY BROOK, N.Y., September 19, 2006—Congressman Peter King will be the Keynote Speaker at the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Public Policy Lecture Series to be held at Stony Brook University on Tuesday, October 10 at 4:00 PM in Room 1006 of the Humanities Building. The event is being held in conjunction with the University’s Center for Italian Studies.

Congressman King, who is Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, will present a lecture entitled, “Homeland Security: Are We Safe?”

“NIAF is the premier Italian American organization in the U.S. and we have benefited through their grant programs and work on the behalf of the community,” Said Mario Mignone, Director of the Center for Italian Studies. “We are thrilled to have on our campus Congressman King to speak on issues that impact our nation and the world.”

Congressman King is serving his seventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected to represent New York’s Third District in 1992, Rep. King has been a leader in the ongoing effort to have more Homeland Security funding based on threat analysis, and is a strong supporter of the war against international terrorism, both at home and abroad. He also serves on the International Relations Committee.

Prior to serving in Congress, Rep. King was elected to three terms as the Comptroller of Nassau County. Before serving in county government, he had extensive experience as a practicing attorney and civic leader. He began his political career in November 1977 by winning election to the Hempstead Town Council. He is the author of three published novels, Terrible Beauty, Deliver Us From Evil, and Vale of Tears, which are based upon his political experiences.

The NIAF Public Policy Lecture Series is a touring program held in collaboration with universities across the nation. It features nationally and internationally known experts discussing critical issues facing the nation and the world. Other speakers have included U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonio Scalia, and Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan, and former White House Chief of Staff John Podesta.
