Stony Brook Professor Elected to Leadership Role of International Nurse Practitioner Organization

STONY BROOK, N.Y., March 24, 2006 — Mary Anne Dumas, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAANP, Clinical Professor at Stony Brook University School of Nursing has been elected to a two year term as Vice President/President-Elect, followed by a two year term as President of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), the only organization specifically devoted to promoting quality nurse practitioner (NP) education at the national and international levels.

“It is an honor for the School of Nursing to have someone in such a prominent national and international leadership role,” said Lenora McClean, Dean, Stony Brook University School of Nursing.

In her new role, Dr. Dumas will be in a position of national and international leadership. She will represent the organization on policy issues as well as education, nurse practitioner, and utilization issues, among many others.

“I am proud to be a Stony Brook faculty, and to be able provide further visibility of the quality and excellence of the faculty at Stony Brook in this leadership role with NONPF,” said Dr. Dumas.

Dr. Dumas has been an FNP since 1977 and is a Clinical Professor at Stony Brook University. She is an innovator, educator, clinician, researcher and author. She is a faculty member in the Stony Brook Master's and Post Master's Programs (Adult and Family Nurse Practitioner), and a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Care Clinic at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Northport, New York. Dr. Dumas is the 2001 recipient of the American College of Nurse Practitioners Sharp Cutting Edge Award, and has received teaching awards from National Organization of Nurse Practitioners. She has received both the SUNY Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Dumas was a 2003 DHHS Primary Health Policy Fellow, and a 2005 Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was the founding Editorial Director of the American Journal of Nurse Practitioners, and represented the ACNP on From Awareness to Action initiative, to increase the rate of blood pressure awareness, treatment and control. Dr. Dumas has published articles on hypertension and her article (Dumas, 1999) has been adopted for use in the hypertensive education of students in many NP, medical school, and residency programs across the nation. She lives in Huntington with her husband, Patrick, and has three grown children.
