“A Season of Giving” was the theme at the Second Annual Harvest Sunset Dinner to support the National Pediatric MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Center at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital, where vital medical research is conducted to decode the mysteries of MS. The event was held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on November 17. More than $25,000 was raised to support the Center’s research and clinical programs.

Stony Brook Receives Science Education Grant from Astellas USA Foundation

Stony Brook University’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CESAME), received a $15,700 grant from the Astellas USA Foundation to support the Protein Modeling Challenge, an annual high school science competition that allows high school students to demonstrate their knowledge of a specific topic in biomedical research by constructing a protein model.

The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook University will showcase “How ‘Thinks’ Work,” an exhibition designed to explore the human thinking process in relation to mathematics, human perception, philosophy, language and nature. The title alludes to the common phrase, “How Things Work,” and suggests the treatment of the thinking process as a universal mechanism.

Dr. Benjamin Luft Discusses 9/11 Oral Histories at Library of Congress

Benjamin J. Luft, M.D., Edmund D. Pellegrino Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Medical Director of Stony Brook’s World Trade Center Health Program, will present “We’re Not Leaving: Responders Oral Histories Redefine 9/11,” at the American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on November 10. The Center will serve as the repository for oral histories of 9/11 first responders from around the country, which are being recorded and filmed by Dr. Luft and the WTC Health Program staff as the Remembering 9/11 oral history project. The lecture will be held in the Mary Pickford Theater, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
