Though a native of and current resident of Syracuse, N.Y., Carol M. Baldwin has strong ties to Long Island, as she lived and raised her family in the area. After losing her husband from cancer in 1983 and being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990, Ms. Baldwin wanted to take an active role in the battle against cancer. Her awareness of the high breast cancer rate on Long Island led her to form the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund in 1996. The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center at SBUMC is also named in her honor. “The entire Baldwin family firmly believes that the key to finding a cure for breast cancer can be found by providing the funding necessary to allow researchers to learn more about this disease,” says Linda Winicki, Director of Development at the Fund, referring to Carol, her two daughters, Jane and Elizabeth, and four sons, actors Alec, Stephen, Billy and Daniel. In addition to Ms. Baldwin as Distinguished Honoree, the gala will also honor two other individuals. Wadie F. Bahou, M.D., Vice Dean for Research, SBUMC, will receive the Dr. Michael Maffetone Award, given to a physician in the field of breast cancer who shows exceptional commitment in searching for a cure of the disease. John A. Danzi, Chairman of the Board, Long Island Hotels, will be presented with the Corporate Champion Award, given to a Long Island Company or individual who demonstrates exceptional commitment in the fight against breast cancer. Many research scientists and cancer specialists as SBUMC have received support for their work through the Fund. To date, the Fund has awarded nearly 60 research grants totaling in excess of $3 million to medical research. The gala begins with a cocktail hour at 6:30 pm. Dinner starts at 7:30 PM, with music and dancing until 11:30 pm. Music will be provided by New York Heat. Black Tie is optional. Individual tickets are $300 each. A table of 10 individuals is $2,500. Sponsorship tables are available, including the Breast Cancer Survivor Table ($2,500), Silver Sponsor ($5,000), Gold Sponsor ($10,000), and Platinum Sponsor ($15,000). The mission of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund is to support both new and established researchers at SBUMC. The Fund’s efforts translate directly to grants that are awarded to researchers at all levels of basic and clinical investigation. For more information about the annual gala or the Carol M.
